In 2016, KPC provided access for researchers from Angelo State University to survey for and trap plains spotted skunks to evaluate their habitat and current health. All trapped animals were released where they were trapped once information regarding their current health were determined. The goals of this research are to document the known range of the plains spotted skunk in Texas, to establish habitat requirements for the species, determine genetic structure of the population, to examine and assess the extent to which renewed and expanded energy development in Texas have fragmented preferred habitat of the plains spotted skunk, and to consider actions that could be used to reduce these impacts
