KPC Educational Programs

Katy Prairie Curriculum Guide for grades 4-12

Volunteer Classes

The Katy Prairie is full of fascinating and surprising connections and stories. If you would like to learn about these connections and lead public nature hikes, the Katy Prairie Conservancy (KPC) has the program for you. PrairiECOnnections is a new series of activity-based interpretation classes for experienced and new KPC volunteers. Each course will focus on making connections between the biological, historical, economic, and cultural dimensions of the Katy Prairie and will illustrate the importance of conserving this priceless resource for future generations. All classes limited to 20 participants. Registration is required.

To register please contact Jaime Gonzalez at jgonzalez@katyprairie.org.

Instructor(s) | Maggie Honig, KPC volunteer and naturalist & Jaime
González, KPC Community Education Manager

Can you think of a living thing that doesn't interact with insects?
Insects are involved in the lives of nearly every living thing, including
us. Some will surprise you - misplaced ladybugs, fake bees, and flies
that steal from spiders! Come explore the relationships of insects to the
living puzzle of the Katy Prairie, including some oddities you may
never have heard of!

Stories & Statistics
Saturday, December 6, 2008 9:00 AM to Noon
Instructor(s): Jaime González, KPC Community Education Manager

Do I need to know the names of all the animals and plants found on
the Katy Prairie to lead tours?
No. Although a general knowledge of
natural history is a very useful tool, interpreting open spaces is more
than naming names. It requires tour leaders to weave stories which
connect the general public to the environment through the use of
demonstrations, information, and group activities. Come out and learn
the basic principles of interpretation through a series of hands-on
activities, discussions, and a nature hike on our Nelson Farm Preserve.
