Summer Science Nights - 2011
A Howling Good Time!
Your evening adventure awaits...
The Katy Prairie is a place for big adventures. In the cool of the evening you are
sure to spot wildlife moving about and witness spectacular sunsets. If youʼre
ready to explore this shadowy world of adventure then our Summer Science
Nights are for you! Weʼll play games, do crafts, run simple experiments, and
take fun-filled hikes to discover some of the sensational science behind the
prairieʼs wildlife and history.
Moonstruck - June 15 (Full) & July 14 (Full)
The moon may look like just another big rock in space but it has had an
amazing history.
Weʼll exploresome of the huge forces that shaped the moon by simulating lava flows and
meteor impacts. Weʼll also learn to identify major features of the moon with the naked eye and
discover how the moon affects animals.
Bug Talk - June 22 (Full) & July 21 (Full)
Insects use chirps, squeaks, rattles, hums, flashes, and
smells (both pleasant and not) to talk to one
another.
Join our "insect band" as we pop,
scrape, whistle our way into a better
appreciation of insect communication using common
household items and games.
Prairie Dogs - June 29 (Full) & July 28 (Full)
Thereʼs nothing more thrilling, or wild, than hearing the howling or yipping
of a wild dog! The Katy Prairie is home to several cousins of the family
pet, including
coyotes and two types of foxes. It was also once
home to the red wolves.
Experience life as a wild dog by trying to sniff out prey, find your
place in your "wolf pack", and even discover why a wet nose is better
than a dry one!
