KPC Hosts Flat Out Fun Day - November 14
Nelson Farms Preserve | 10 AM - 4 PM
Girl Digging
It is still hot and dry on the prairie but soon we expect that some cold fronts will move in to provide relief from the heat.  These fronts will also bring the flocks of geese and other migratory waterfowl that winter on the Katy Prairie and that make it the international avian destination it is today.  The cooler weather portends another major event as well - Flat Out Fun Day on the Katy Prairie, our annual event to show off the many wonders of the prairie.

Fun On a Hay RIdeThe Conservancy's Nelson Farms Preserve will serve as locus operandi for Flat Out Fun Day again this year.  Expect to enjoy many activities that will provide your family and friends, children and grandchildren (or even the child within you) an upfront, close, and personal look at the prairie.  Take a hayride and explore the many different habitats on Nelson Farms - the riparian corridors, the natural and agricultural wetlands, prairie, and woodlands.  Discover the different wildlife species that use Nelson Farms - river otters, beavers, bobcats, Gulf Fritillary butterflies, cricket frogs, coyotes, and too many species of birds to list.  Talking about birds, you will have a great learning experience at our beginning bird watching station.  You can learn how to use binoculars and scopes and see what different species of birds would look like if they would just stand still and pose.

Come learn how rice is grown and harvested.  Check out the huge farm equipment that makes harvesting hundreds of acres of rice possible and efficient.  Learn how rice gets from the Katy Prairie to your supermarket shelves.  Be the first to hike the Green Darner Trail - first through a tallgrass prairie, next through a stand of oakKids with sweep net trees, along a rice field, and down to the Crayfish Pond. At each stage of the trail, you can participate in hands-on activities - making seed balls to start your own native prairie at home or dipping a net in the pond to sample the aquatic wildlife that use our wetlands and lots of other projects.

Woman with birdOther groups will also be on hand to add to your enjoyment of the prairie, including the Houston Audubon Society, the Houston Zoo, Texas Wildlife Association, and many others.  Come see live animals and learn more about their programs and events.

Or just come out and spend the day outdoors.  We anticipate that November 14 will be cool and breezy - just the kind of day when residents think - "Wow, this is the kind of weather we should have all the time."  So come explore, come play, come learn, but just come.  It won't be a party without you.

ECOnnections: Kids and Critters
Saturday, October 31

ECOnnections are expert-led classes available for free to KPC current and prospective volunteers to give them everything they need to pass their knowledge on to others. Each class focuses on a different aspect of prairie education - from the flora and fauna to the ground beneath our feet.

Join us for Kids and Critters on October 31. Some folks believe that teaching children can either be a trick or a treat. This Halloween, discover how teaching children in the outdoors can be an enjoyable and highly meaningful experience. You'll discover how to manage groups more effectively, how to build discovery learning into a youth-oriented tour, and why exposure to nature is so critical to a child's development. This course will be taught by KPC Volunteer Lesli Edge, a seasoned, highly-effective science education specialist with Katy ISD. Her insights will help you construct challenging and enjoyable experiences.

Date: Saturday, October 31, 10 AM - 1 PM
Location: KPC Field Office
Registration required. Free to all current and future KPC volunteers. Email info@katyprairie.org.

Flat Out Fun Day on the Prairie
Saturday, November 14

Looking for a chance to get outdoors and experience the Flat Out Fun side of nature? Want to learn about those butterflies, salamanders, and birds you see skittering around your backyard? You'll discover these things and more on the Katy Prairie at Flat Out Fun Day on the Prairie. Come celebrate all the plants, people, and critters that make up the natural heritage of the Katy Prairie - and your own backyard!

KPC will host a fun, family-friendly event and preserve tour on Saturday, November 14 on our Nelson Farms Preserve. We've partnered with other local organizations such as Houston Audubon Society, Houston Zoo, Texas Wildlife Association, and more to bring the wild westside to life just for you! Families can participate in hands-on activities that highlight some of the amazing things you can see on the Katy Prairie.  Use a dip net to capture aquatic insects in a pond, plant grass seedlings to help restore a patch of prairie, sweep for insects in grass taller than you are, learn to make a duck call, get up close and personal with huge farm equipment, learn how to identify and where to find some of the common prairie birds, take a hayride, and much more!

Date: Saturday, November 14, 10 AM - 4 PM
Location: Nelson Farms Preserve
Registration not required. $5 per carload. Email info@katyprarie.org for more details.

How to dress for trips to the prairie? Make sure that you wear long pants and close-toe shoes for all KPC events. A long sleeve shirt and hat are also advised.

Observations - Of Coneflowers and Cows
by Jaime Gonzalez
Community Education Manager

What a difference a year makes. Last year the coneflowers, Rattlesnake Masters, Big Bluestems, and other prairie plants that we rescued from the rock-hard ground of the Saums Road Prairie were battered, bruised, and more than a little thirsty. With a little TLC (and water!), these refugees have not only survived but thrived! Our little prairie patch is bursting with blooms from the radiant Swamp Sunflowers to a purple haze known as Gulf Muhly. This patch is definitely a head-turner.

Soon we will decorate one of our walls at our home office in Houston with a life-sized mural of our Saums Prairie patch. Just a small way of bringing the prairie back to town with us for all to enjoy.

I also had the good fortune of witnessing an increasingly rare sight in Harris County last month. Each year Jim Warren and his expert crew of cowboys ride out on the Warren Ranch  (the largest active cattle ranch left in Harris County) to move every last cow, bull, and calf  as part of  the annual Warren Ranch Roundup. Cattle are brought back to the historic 1920s-era barn for counting and vaccinations. It was quite a thrill watching these cowboys direct the herd using a combination of horse cuts, hoots, and the startling sound of whip-cracks in the air (not on the herd!) to zip them through the pens. It takes a lot of skill to handle such huge animals without injury to either beast or man. If you'd like to watch a short video on the roundup, just click here.

KPC activity at Nature Fest 2008Good Friends and Neighbors
Bridgeland Community goes native with KPC

On September 26 the Bridgeland Community, a project of General Growth Properties, once again held Nature Fest, an annual event to encourage area residents to explore the outdoors and check out the new neighborhood.  KPC was promoted in all publicity for the event and received more than $2,400 in donations from attendees.  This is the second year that Bridgeland has chosen to help the Katy Prairie Conservancy, its almost next-door neighbor to the west, in this way.  Thank you to all the Bridgeland staff who made the event so wonderful and who have worked hard to spread the word about KPC.  Thank you Lona Shipp, Cindy Theut, Kimberly Elliott, Elizabeth Dominguez, Sam Snelling, Tricia Brasseux, and Peter Houghton, Bridgeland's General Manager, for your support of KPC's education programs and for helping us meet more than 3,000 of your friends and neighbors.

Visitors to the KPC booth got a chance to get dirty and to go native - they made seedballs that they were able to take home to start their own native prairies.  Kids and grownups alike had a ball.  In addition many participated in a prairie smell test.  They checked out 5 plants found on the prairie and sniffed out their scents - licorice, mint, cucumber, bay, and fennel.  Others took a hike along Bridgeland's Nature Trail, an activity led by KPC's Community Education Manager, Jaime Gonzalez, and Advisory Board Member, Wally Ward.  And of course they got to shop - for reusable grocery bags and Nature Fest t-shirts.

But best of all it gave KPC a chance to show its stuff.  And who better to help us but our able volunteers.  KPC has a small staff given the thousands of acres it owns and the many programs, tours, and activities it hosts annually.  So we could not do it without volunteer help.  Thanks especially to our regular volunteers:

Lesli Edge, Diane Kerr, Grace Leggett, Iris Poteet, Alan Richardson, Nancy Shackleford, and Wally Ward.

We also again received help from student members of the Cy-Ranch Key Club.  Thank you Cy-Ranch Key Club Sponsor Jennifer Hydes for encouraging your students to volunteer.  These high schoolers were quick studies: they learned our story backwards and forwards, they related perfectly to the kids who came up to our booth, and they even served as bankers and retailers.  Many thanks to:

Anoosha Ahmad, Hannah Beadle, Hannah Bielefeldt, Laura Carlton, Jessica DeCoach, Darian Garcia, Courtney Golladay, Jamie Hackbarth, Rachel Horn, Jordon LaFleur, Viridiana LaFleur, Jamie San Pedro, Meredith Seaver, Kendall Talbot, and Hunter Wilde
