Letter from the Director
State of the Prairie 2008
The Houston region is expected to grow by more than 3.5 million people by 2035. The Katy Area Economic Development Council predicts that the vast majority of undeveloped land on the Katy Prairie will be converted to residential, commercial, and industrial uses by 2035. Our time to save the Katy Prairie grows short. Please click on Read Full Report to get the entire State of the Prairie 2008 Report. The report also includes a list of key accomplishments made by the Katy Prairie Conservancy in 2007 along with all the individual, foundations, and corporations that supported KPC from January 1 through December 31, 2008. Observations by Wesley Newman, KPC Land Manager
Here it is, almost June! Can you believe it? The long cool spring pretty much offset the lack of rain this year, however, it is getting dry, especially with the heat of the last two weeks. The prairie is currently at about 75 percent of normal rainfall for the year but the month of May is only at 35 percent of normal monthly rainfall.
So far the crops are doing well, unlike last year when only about half were planted by this time because it wouldn't stop raining. As always there is plenty to see on the prairie. A couple of Bald Eagles have been hanging out along Pattison and Hebert Roads near the KPC Field Office. There are still plenty of wildflowers to see if you look. They are not quite as abundant as the early spring wildflowers but, to my eyes, every bit as pretty. Purple-Headed Sneezeweed, Plains Coreopsis, various sunflowers, Beebalm, various Water-Primrose's (in the ditches and wet areas), White Prickly Poppy Bishop's-Weed, Indian Plantain, and Cut-Leaved Evening-Primrose, to name a few. Come on out to the Katy Prairie, there is always something to see, if you look.

Volunteer Opportunities, Education, & Acknowledgements
KPC Volunteer of the Month
Grace Liggett - Grace Liggett has worked tirelessly over the last several months to get the Coastal Prairie Native Seed Nursery back into tip-top shape. Her strong conservation ethic drives her work at the nursery: "I love the biodiversity of the prairie. From the tiny creatures enriching and aerating the soil, the mammals of all shapes and sizes, to the vast array of birds, all depending upon the prairie environment for their very lives. I'm very happy to be helping to restore the prairies so they can fully support native wildlife again. We want to leave a legacy of life and hope for our children to enjoy."
Under Grace's direction, the nursery has been cleared of weeds and now sports commercial-grade weedbarrier throughout. She will soon be adding an irrigation system to the nursery and she could use your help. Please keep visiting our homepage at www.katyprairie.org for future nursery work dates.

Prairie Exchange
Did you contribute something other than cash to the Katy Prairie Conservancy in 2007. Perhaps you contributed your time or you donated binoculars or professional engineering services to KPC. We want to make sure that we have an up-to-date listing of all the goods, services, and materials that were donated to KPC in 2007 so please let us know what you contributed. If you know the value of your donation, please let us know that as well. Don't worry, we will just list your name and/or the name of your company and not the amount on our website. However, the amount you contributed is important because our auditors will use it to value the amount of donated services and goods and materials we received in 2007.

Support KPC
Looking for more creative ways to support the Katy Prairie Conservancy and help introduce more people to the wonder of the prairie. Here are two new ways:
Buy a KPC T-shirt. We have wonderful new T-shirts that promote the Flat Out Wonderful Katy Prairie. Net proceeds from the sale of the T-shirts help support education and outreach programs on the prairie. T-shirts for adults are $15 and for children are $10. Come to an event and buy direct. You will avoid shipping and handling charges ($3.00 per shirt.) Can't come to an event? Send a check to KPC for the number of T-shirts you want along with applicable shipping charges and we will send your order right out. When ordering T-shirts, please specify your color choice, green or white (as pictured right) as well as your size.
Do you like to shop? Do you buy your groceries at Kroger. If you do, you can link your Kroger card to the Katy Prairie Conservancy and everytime you shop, a portion of the amount you spend will go to help provide programming on the Katy Prairie. Please click on the link Buy Groceries Now to download the form you need and bring it to Kroger next time you go shopping. Go to Customer Service to link your card to KPC!
Regular Support is also critical to our success. Preserving the Flat Out Wonderful Katy Prairie depends on the support of people like you. Give to the Katy Prairie today and support our efforts to protect this great place for all Texans for all time, including you, your families, and your friends. Please visit www.katyprairie.org to find out how you can support our educational programming, our land conservation efforts, our property enhancement activities, or the permanent protection of the Warren Ranch.
