Letter from the Director
Birdathon: Counting for Conservation on the Warren Ranch
What's a Birdathon? It's observing as many kinds of birds as possible, by sight or sound, during a 24-hour period in order to raise money for environmental conservation.
This winter Bob and Maggie Honig, Katy Prairie Conservancy (KPC) supporters, avid bird watchers, and naturalists, will do a Birdathon on KPC's historic, 6500-acre Warren Ranch.
Why are they doing this? To raise money to ensure the conservation of the Warren Ranch as open space and to increase awareness of the importance of the ranch to the Katy Prairie ecosystem.
The Warren Ranch occupies a critical geographic position among protected lands on the Katy Prairie, broadly linking KPC's eastern and western lands into a contiguous whole. The contiguous nature of the protected lands on the Katy Prairie is an essential factor in maximizing their ecological value - for birds, for other wildlife, and for the public who get to enjoy recreational opportunities on the Katy Prairie.
We need your help to make permanent protection a reality. When KPC acquired a majority interest in the Warren Ranch in 2004, it also acquired a very large mortgage. The ranch will not be permanently protected until the mortgage has been eliminated. Every $3,000 we raise pays off the mortgage on one more acre.
You can help by making a financial pledge to support Bob and Maggie's Birdathon (either per species of bird or a flat amount).
How does it work? Let's say that you pledge $10 per species. If Bob and Maggie document 75 species in their 24-hour Birdathon, your contribution would be $10 times 75 species or $750. Or you can decide to donate a flat amount - say $50 - to ensure the success of Bob and Maggie's Birdathon. Contributions at all levels are welcome - every bit helps!
By November, wintering birds will have returned to the prairie so you can expect that Bob and Maggie will observe a variety of ducks, geese, hawks, and sparrows. Bob and Maggie will visit grasslands, agricultural fields, woodlots, hedgerows and treelines, ponds, Warren Lake (a reservoir on the ranch), wetlands, drainages, and the ranch residence/headquarters area to observe the different bird species found in the various habitats on the ranch and thus maximize their species count, and in turn maximize funds raised. Please look for more information in late summer or early autumn. We will let you know how to pledge and other details about KPC's Birdathon for the Warren Ranch.

Observations by Jaime Gonzalez, Community Education Manager
June was a dry month. We recorded just less than one inch of rain. Much of the water in KPC's wildlife-sustaining reservoirs and wetlands have dried up considerably. Both our Crawfish Pond (at the Nelson Farms Preserve) and Hebert Wetlands project have only small puddles remaining.
Fortunately, some of the larger creeks and wetlands have considerable water resources. Early in June, KPC Volunteer Michael Bustamente was driving down Hebert Road near KPC's Field Office and nearly hit a loping, brown creature which quickly jumped into Live Oak Creek. Much to his excitement he saw the the animal was a river otter which was swimming with three other otters. He quickly pulled out his camera and snapped the photo above.

Support KPC
Looking for more creative ways to support the Katy Prairie Conservancy and help introduce more people to the wonder of the prairie. Here are two new ways:
Buy a KPC T-shirt. We have wonderful new T-shirts that promote the Flat Out Wonderful Katy Prairie. Net proceeds from the sale of the T-shirts help support education and outreach programs on the prairie. T-shirts for adults are $15 and for children are $10. Come to an event and buy direct. You will avoid shipping and handling charges (approximately $3.00 per shirt.) Can't come to an event? Send a check to KPC for the number of T-shirts you want along with applicable shipping charges and we will send your order right out. When ordering T-shirts, please specify your color choice, green or white (as pictured right) as well as your size.
Do you like to shop? Do you buy your groceries at Kroger. If you do, you can link your Kroger card to the Katy Prairie Conservancy. Everytime you shop, a portion of the amount you spend will go to help provide programming on the Katy Prairie. Please click on the link Buy Groceries Now to download the form you need and bring it to Kroger the next time you go shopping. Go to Customer Service to link your card to KPC!
Regular Support is also critical to our success. Preserving the Flat Out Wonderful Katy Prairie depends on the support of people like you. Give to the Katy Prairie today and support our efforts to protect this great place for all Texans for all time, including you, your families, and your friends. Please visit www.katyprairie.org to find out how you can support our educational programming, our land conservation efforts, our property enhancement activities, or the permanent protection of the Warren Ranch.
