Director's Note
Spend More Time at the (Field) Office
"I've been things and seen places." --Mae West, American actress
We have more than a few places for you to see on the Katy
Prairie but one you may not have visited is an unassuming, out-of-the-way over
performer - the Katy Prairie Conservancy's Field Office Preserve. KPC bought the 155-acre tract in 2001 and
also acquired a 7,000 square-foot structure which serves as our field office-hence
the unappealing appellation.
But the Field Office Preserve is more than a building or just our field office. Wildlife abounds
on the tract. Ducks and geese roost on a
tranquil reservoir, sparrows and mourning doves flitter among peach and pecan trees improbably
planted by the tract's former owner, butterflies alight on the native grasses,
and bees search for nectar on the wildflowers still blooming in our nursery.
The Field Office Preserve is abuzz with human activity as well. Volunteers have rescued more
than 1,000 plugs of native plants, grasses, and wildflowers and transplnated them in our Texas
Coastal Prairie Native Seed Nursery. Boy scouts and other volunteers created a trail from the nursery edge back
to the plant beds where Grace Liggett and many Master Naturalists have nurtured 200 seedlings
to mature plants. John
Lane used a tree spade to transplant 20 plugs of
native sod and Chip Davis of ChipCo transplanted 2,500-square feet of native
sod to create a demonstration prairie to introduce the public to prairie
ecology. A new interpretive garden shows off the resplendent colors and
blooms of natives found on the coastal tallgrass prairie areas.
Come out during our November events to be things and
see places on the Field Office Preserve.
Good things sometimes have boring names. We hope you'll take time for a seventh season of The Office (and what's around it). Mary Anne Piacentini

Events
November 2, 2008 and each Friday morning in November Open Trails
KPC's Open Trails encourages visitors to experience a beautiful and fascinating KPC preserve at their own pace along a designated path. Go to our website to download a podcast that will guide you on your way.
Come see what KPC's been up to this year! We've been hard at work with the help of our intrepid volunteers expanding our Coastal Prairie Native Seed Nusery and putting together our interpretive garden. You'll tour these facilities and then meander down a path through the expansive prairie grasslands of the 155-acre tract to the reservoir, where geese and ducks roost and frolic in the tranquil waters.

November 7, 2008 Can't make it out to the prairie?
Join us at our home office for a Seed Kit Party
Looking for an
opportunity to help KPC with its Native Seed Nursery effort but can't make it
out to the Katy Prairie? Have a small, sunny spot in your backyard and
like to watch things grow? KPC is looking for folks who can grow native
grasses and wildflowers at home this winter and into early spring 2009. These
plants will be planted in our Native Seed Nursery in May 2009 and will serve as
a seed source for future prairie restoration efforts.
KPC will host a Seed Kit Stuffing
party to make 100 seed growing kits. Each
kit will contain seeds for two species of native plants, seed-growing
instruction sheets, and seed-growing flats. We'll be asking seed-growing
partners to provide topsoil for this volunteer-led conservation activity.
Date: Friday, November 7, 2008 from 10 AM to 12 PM. Location: KPC Home Office at 3015 Richmond Avenue If
you're interested in growing out native plants for KPC or would like to attend
the Seed Kit party on November 7th please contact Jaime
Gonzalez at jgonzalez@katyprairie.org.

Observations
by Jaime Gonzalez, Community Education Manager
KPC
hosted its annual Family Day on the Prairie celebration under a flawless blue
prairie sky on October 18th. Families and friends enjoyed a morning
of fun and fascination as they traveled between educational stations. Our
volunteers ensured that guests had many exciting choices along the way
including opportunities to sweep net for insects, plant prairie grasses, make
duck calls using a take-home whistle, dip net for aquatic insects, spot birds
through binoculars, hold baby chicks, take a hayride, and learn about rice
growing in front of a 30,000 pound rice combine! We are looking forward to expanding Family Day in 2009 and will be working diligently to get the word out to a broad public so that we will have a considerably larger audience for next year's event. We'd
like to once again thank the many volunteers who contributed with their time, creativity, and elbow grease to this year's
event.

Tour Guides Needed! Saturday, November 8, 2008
KPC needs tour guides for our Prairie Discovery Tour on Saturday, November 8, 2008 from 9 AM to 12 PM.
This month, we'll be showing off our Field Office and its surrounding
preserves. You'll lead a group in a loop from the first of KPC's trails
showcasing our interpretive garden and native seed nursery through grasslands
teeming with wildlife and past a reservoir, all just a short walk from our
Field Office. If you'd like to volunteer to lead a tour, please contact Jaime Gonzalez at jgonzalez@katyprairie.org or 713.523.6135.
Katy Prairie Rangers Next meeting November 8, 2008 at KPC Field Office
KPC is proud to have a dedicated corps of volunteers known
for their creativity, wealth of knowledge, and willingness to help in our endeavors. Now this distinguished group will also be
known as the Katy Prairie Rangers.
Their first meeting was held Saturday, October 11 at
KPC's Field Office to agree on the group's structure and focus. The Rangers identified organizational goals,
volunteer rewards, and education and leadership opportunities in addition to determining three critical areas where volunteer
leadership and coordination will push KPC to new heights: Family Day on the Prairie, the Native Seed Nursery, and Community Events. The group elected Grace Liggett to lead the Native Seed Nusery coordination and Lesli Edge to lead Community Events coordination but we are still looking for a volunteer leader to step forward to
help coordinate the 2009 Family Day on the Prairie. You can
read meeting notes from the first Katy Prairie Rangers meeting by clicking here.
What does it take to become a Katy Prairie Ranger? We require 20 hours
of service to KPC for admission into the Katy Prairie Rangers. KPC
is already planning special field trips and events for Rangers including
special "Katy Prairie Highlights" tours where Rangers will be taken to the best
that the Katy Prairie has to offer. Anyone interested in joining the Rangers should contact Jaime Gonzalez at jgonzalez@katyprairie.org.

Support for KPC
Contribute to save the Warren Ranch!
Saving the Warren Ranch, one acre at a time David and Iris
Poteet, longtime friends (and volunteers!) of the Katy
Prairie Conservancy, generously gave to KPC's Warren Ranch fund in October. Their
contribution will go toward reducing KPC's mortgage on the Warren Ranch,
thereby ensuring its protection for the benefit of its wildlife and all Texans
forever. Thanks so much to the Poteets for their unflagging support and
invaluable gifts of both time and resources.
How can you do your part to save the Warren Ranch? The Warren Ranch Birdathon is just around the corner!
You can help save the Warren Ranch too by pledging
a gift in KPC's Warren Ranch Birdathon. In December, Bob and Maggie Honig, avid
naturalists, birdwatchers, and fans of the Katy Prairie, will undertake a bird
count on KPC's Warren Ranch Preserve. When KPC acquired the Warren Ranch in
2004, we also acquired a large mortgage. Funds from the Warren Ranch Birdathon
will be used to reduce that mortgage, ensuring that the Warren Ranch will
continue to be protected. Wintering birds will have returned to the prairie, so
we can expect to see ducks, geese, hawks, sparrows, and more during this
dynamic time.
You can help make the Warren Ranch Birdathon a success by
pledging a flat amount (e.g. $100) or by pledging a per species ($3 per species). Contributions of all levels are welcome--every dollar counts! If you want to
help save the Warren Ranch, please send an email that includes your name,
mailing address, and pledge amount to info@katyprairie.org
or click here for more details.
More Ways You Can Help Looking for more creative ways to support the Katy Prairie Conservancy? Here are several things that you can do to help:
Contribute to the Prairie Patchwork Fund
KPC needs more friends who mix well with soil. The more money we can raise, the more square feet we can protect. Every $10 we raise means one more square foot of prairie can be transplanted on the Katy Prairie; every $1,500 saves anouth 500 square feet. Funds will also help us maintain the plants at our nursery. Think of your gift as a great way to "spread" your money around. It will grow dividends year in and year out.
Do you like to shop? Do you buy your groceries at Kroger? If you do, you can link your Kroger card to the Katy Prairie Conservancy. Everytime you shop, a portion of the amount you spend will go to help provide educational programming on the Katy Prairie. Please click on the link Buy Groceries Now to download the form you need and bring it to Kroger the next time you go shopping. Go to Customer Service to link your card to KPC!
Regular Support is also critical to our success. Preserving the Flat Out Wonderful Katy Prairie depends on the support of people like you. Give to the Katy Prairie today and support our efforts to protect this place for all Texans for all time, including you, your families, and your friends. Please visit www.katyprairie.org to find out how you can support our land conservation efforts, educational programming, permanent protection of the Warren Ranch, or property enhancement activities.
