Director's Report
Green Thumbs Wanted!

Once the Katy Prairie was a sea of grasses and wildflowers as far as the eye could see.  But times have changed and today much of the prairie has been converted to "improved" grasses and agricultural crops.  But there are still patches of prairie that are awash with different species, including big and little bluestem, winecup, black-eyed susan, yellow stargrass, meadow beauty, and many more that are hard to come by in most nurseries.

So with your help, we're hoping to grow some more of our own.  Best of all, you can join in the fun.  You can either pick up the seeds at our Houston office or we'll mail them to you.  Either way, you can help jumpstart the renaissance of the Katy Prairie landscape from your own back (or front) yard, patio, or even window sill.  Just add water and dirt.

The young plants grown out by volunteers will be transplanted along both sides of the new trail that will lead from Warren Ranch Road down to Warren Lake and the Matt Cook Wildlife Viewing Platform in the late spring.  We have already received a grant from the Texas Birding Classic thanks to the Vopak Vultures team led by Don Verser.  These funds will help us buy seed and plants that we have been unable to collect.  We also have been collecting seeds at various sites throughout the region so we have plenty of seeds.  Now we just need plenty of grow-out volunteers.

If all goes according to plan, before too long we'll have transformed the margins of the 100-foot long trail to the lake, so visitors will be able to experience what a tallgrass prairie looked like before Houston was settled.  If we have a bumper crop, the surplus will be transplanted at KPC's Field Preserve.  Eventually, we hope to have 30 or so acres at the front of KPC's main building, KPC's Field Office, planted in native grasses and wildflowers.

Not sure what you want to grow?  Visit the link below and "shop" the many flowers and grasses in our online gallery.

Not exactly sure how to get the best results?  Check out the link to our grow-out handbook; it contains text and video.

Want to pick up your seeds?  Come by KPC's offices during business hours (Monday - Friday, 9 - 5, call 713.523.6135 to make sure that we will be in.)

Want your seeds mailed to you?  Send us a self-addressed stamped envelope requesting the species you'd like to grow out if you have a preference, or not if you like surprises.

Want to see who else is growing out plants or help get more seeds ready for the Great Grow Out?  KPC will be co-hosting a seed packing party at the Houston Zoo on January 5th.  Our goal is to bag up 1000 packets of seeds for 22 species.  Visit our website to find out more.

Annual Cypress Creek Christmas Bird Count (CBC)
January 1 from 6:30 am - Afternoon
The 34th annual Cypress Creek CBC will be held on Friday January 1, 2010. Each year dozens of bird-watchers, both inexperienced and seasoned, venture out onto our prairie preserves, farms, creeks, and wetlands to catalogue the remarkable and dazzling bird life on the Katy Prairie.  KPC will lead a group of CBC participants on an expedition to record birds on our diverse preserve system. We anticipate that this year's count will be as exciting as ever with opportunities to potentially see or hear Bald Eagles, Peregrine Falcons, Bobwhite Quail, waterfowl, and over one hundred other species.  If you'd like to assist with the count this year, please contact Jaime Gonzalez at 281.660.6683.

Date: Saturday, January 1, from 6:00 AM - Afternoon
Location:
  Meet at KPC Field Office
Registration required: Call 281.660.6683 or email us at jaimegonzalez72@gmail.com for more details.

Note: KPC CBC volunteers are not meeting at Paul Rushing Park. You will meet at the KPC Field Office.  Afterward, if you're interested, volunteers are welcome to attend the count-down dinner with other CBC counters who have been observing wildlife on other parts of the prairie.  The dinner will be held at Luby's in Cypress on Highway 290.

What to wear for trips to the prairie?
All participants should wear appropriate outdoor clothing, including closed-toe shoes and long pants.  A long-sleeve shirt is also recommended and you might even want a jacket through the winter as it can be windy.  Please bring your own water and insect repellent.  Winter is often colder on the prairie than intown so please dress accordingly.

Big Bluestem - At Last!
by Jaime Gonzalez
Community Education Manager

Last Fall a seed ripened atop a ruddy stalk of  Big Bluestem grass just south of Houston.

Last November the seed was stuffed into the darkness of a seed collector's bag.

Last January a seed grower carefully positioned the seed into a four-inch pot and nurtured it until it grew to a strong seedling in May.

Last July the seedling was planted at KPC's Nursery where it grew and grew and grew.

This month I looked out on the Nursery and saw a mighty five-foot Big Bluestem festooned with seeds of its own. Big Bluestem is once again thriving at the Field Office - at last!

This story illustrates the power of  volunteer seed growers. They are not just growing showy greenery. They are growing plants that have been nearly eliminated from the landscape - wildflowers and grasses that feed hungry sparrows, drink up floodwaters, remind us of our roots, and help cool a hot metropolis.

PrairieWorks - A Fun Way to End the Week!

Want to get your hands dirty on the prairie?  Every Friday from 9 am to 12 pm, KPC hosts PrairieWorks at our Field Preserve. Volunteers can come and work in the Coastal Prairie Native Seed Nursery: watering, weeding, and potting seedlings.  After or before your volunteer efforts, you can take a stroll along the Field Preserve as part of our weekly Open Trails program. Email info@katyprairie.org for more details.

Great Grow-Out

Want to get involved with conservation but can't get out to the Katy Prairie?  KPC has a project for you!  This winter, we're working in conjunction with other environmental groups to encourage volunteers to grow out seeds throughout the spring.  Once sprouted, these seedlings will be transferred to KPC's preserves for use in restoration projects.  We'll provide you with the seeds, flats, and instructions; you provide the dirt, water, and TLC these little plants need to grow. Read more about the Great Grow-Out on our website or scroll up to the Director's Report.

If you're interested in picking up seeds, please call us at 713.523.6135 or send us an email and we'll get back to you in the New Year.  KPC offices will be closed through January 3.
