Star Party at Warren LakeConstellations and Coyotes Dazzle at Unplugged Adventures

It was a chilly but star-studded night Saturday, February 12, 2011, when KPC debuted its new Unplugged Adventures with a Star Party at Warren Lake. Unplugged Adventures is a new program designed to unplug you from the ordinary of every day life and plug you into nature with fun-filled activities led by experts.  Accompanied by the yelping of a boisterous coyote pack just south of the new Matt Cook Memorial Wildlife Viewing Platform, a bevy of enthusiastic and talented astronomers from the Fort Bend Astronomy Club used their telescopes to reveal the secrets of the universe to nearly seventy guests. The moons of Jupiter dazzled like diamonds, the milky Orion Nebula thrilled, and the moon's pale glory reflected off the eyes of bright-eyed children peeping through lenses. Afterward we took a short but exciting night hike around the lake and discovered gopher mounds, chirping night birds, and other mysteries of the nocturnal world along the way.

Stargazing at Warren LakeKPC would like to send a galaxy-sized thank you to Jim Jackson and the rest of the Fort Bend Astronomy Club who shared their passion and knowledge with our guests. We would also like to thank our talented volunteers for being such a great resource for our guests. Lastly, we can't thank our guests enough for making our first Unplugged Adventure such a smashing success!

Stay tuned for our next Unplugged Adventure on Saturday, April 16 when we'll be making and flying kites on the Indiangrass Preserve.

Saturday, February 26 from 4:30 - 6:30 PM

Katy Prairie Conservancy and Houston Audubon young professionals groups are joining forces to offer a one-of-a-kind tour of the majestic prairie for people in their 20s, 30s, and 40s.  Join us at dusk on February 26 for a guided bird walk around beautiful Warren Lake.  After we've seen ducks, grebes, hawks, eagles, and owls, we'll sip hot chocolate at the new viewing platform.

Date: Saturday, February 26 from 4:30 to 6:30 PM
Where: Matt Cook Wildlife Viewing Platform at Warren Lake
Registration not required. Free and open to the public - bring friends!

What to wear for trips to the prairie?
All participants should wear appropriate outdoor clothing, including closed-toe shoes and long pants.  A long-sleeve shirt is also recommended. Be sure to dress in layers as sometimes the prairie gets cold and you need the warmth.  If the prairie heats up, you can shed your outer layers.  Hats are great if you want to be shielded from the sun.  Please bring your own water and insect repellent.
